I love BTN but I wish there could be 3 to 4 comprehension questions at the end of each story that ss can answer in their books. The questions could be on a word doc so that teachers can edit.3 votes
Hi! We have discussion questions attached to each story now. We implemented this feature last year. Check out the right hand column for the menu option “Discussion Questions” for 10 questions that could also be used for comprehension.
My idea is get to know something about history and many things. Like DID YOU KNOW,the first animal...1 vote
Hi, we already put a did you know in the show at times. It’s not every week but like the quiz and poll we also add a Did You Know every now and then. Thanks!
put all of the btn storty on one page so we all know where they are2 votes
Where are the answers for the quiz questions? Without having to spend time watching the video it would be very helpful to have the answers? My students can peer mark then by just viewing an 'answer page'1 vote
Hi Laura, At the end of the quiz, click ‘Check your Answers’ and then ‘Review Answers’. As the students go through the answers, if one was wrong the answer should appear below the options in a small blue font. If you are doing the quiz on a board as part of a class exercise make sure you actually make a selection though for the correct answer to appear.
What opportunities do you provide for students to audition/submit a report or anything of a sort to be on the show?1 vote
any stories regarding kids with ASD (autism) would be great, especially a positve aspect to this common learning difficulty.
I teach some cool kids with ASD. They would love to be more celebrated for the great young people they are.2 votes
We sure do! Check out this search result which has a couple of stories relating to ASD:
but in particular our story from the other week App Creator: http://www.abc.net.au/btn/story/s4513462.htm
and I’m not sure if any of your students have Aspergers but we have a great story from Declan on that: http://www.abc.net.au/btn/story/s4085956.htm
Thanks for watching.
Keep all people updated on the "Happy Birthday" court decision4 votes
The judge has made his decision and I have updated the story with the result. (see related Information section) http://www.abc.net.au/btn/story/s4287367.htm
Thanks for your feedback! Reports are largely driven by newsworthiness and available vision/talent/locations but should the topics present themselves we have no problems reporting on them.
Like what aussie kids are doing like camping and stuff and u could add competitions for us to enter1 vote
Thanks for your feedback. We do like to report on what Aussie kids are doing yes – recent stories like Banjo Girl and Karate Kid are examples of that. However we only have 5 stories a week and so we need to include reports that help explain the biggest news stories to everyone.
We do have a Rookie Reporter section now though that can be used to upload stories that you report on! Maybe if you want to have a go at making your own report you could give that a try? http://www.abc.net.au/btn/rookie.htm
Also, ABC Open do a lot of reports of things that are happening around the country – you may find some interesting stories in your local area.
Competitions are a good idea but we don’t have the funding to support that activity.
Is it possible that BTN reporters (and the education advisor!) be instructed on how to use apostrophes correctly? There are mistakes every week, especially by Nathan and Sarah, in the transcript which even my English students pick up. E.g. in the 1920's, both of Australia's possible PM’s.1 vote
Thanks for your feedback. We have made the corrections to the transcripts and will ensure that these errors don’t occur in the future.
I've just done a quick scan of the site and easily picked up two spelling errors - zoomorphic calligraphy is "cleaver" (clever) and the surfing scientist has a trick or two up his sleave (sleeve). Surely the ABC's children's media website would have one or two people who can spell involved in the creation and design, especially on the page for teachers? Or is it going to be on the test tomorrow?1 vote
History of his life and achievements and relevance to the world4 votes
Hello, you’ll now find a story on his life and the historical context of the Apartheid. http://www.abc.net.au/btn/story/s3906510.htm
Why can't we download higher quality videos. JAGGIES look terrible6 votes
We finally updated our video player over the term break and so now have the ability to add different quality versions. We now have slightly higher resolution versions of the video, just click the HD symbol when the video is playing. (note that it’s not an option everywhere)
To work with the Austrdlian Curriculum and provide episodes that co-inside with our yr 8 and 9 SOSE classes or English classes.
I am a yr 8/9 Eng / Sose teacher- have programs / episodes to correlate with the units we do in term 1 right around Australia- e.g. Teens in the News (eng) and The Industrial Revolution ( sose/ history). This would be so absolutely fantastic if it could be done. A list of appropriate episodes under each unit of study.11 votes
Our Teacher Resources all have AC links included in the first page. Unfortunately, We haven’t done anything on Industrial Revolution. Also SOSE won’t be part of the National Curriculum.
The best way to find relevant stories on BTN is to search our stories based on keywords. You may find more relevant content on Splash which does list content within curriculum learning areas. http://splash.abc.net.au/
Expand Behind BTN resources about production to include some more filming tips, interview tips etc from the experts
This resource about your production process is already excellent, but expanding it even further with a weekly tech tip for filming, recording, interviewing, scripting... would be brilliant. Students value tips from the experts.2 votes
Our Rookie Reporters page now has those things which were suggested. Thanks for the feedback! http://www.abc.net.au/btn/rookie.htm
BtN did drop off iView for a while there but it’s been back on for a few weeks now. http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/series/behindthenews
I have been trying to contact you, but the "Contact us" does not work. Perhaps you could just supply an email adress?2 votes
We have had some additional information which has helped us think up a possible fix. We believe this is working now.
can you please add subtitles to your videos as my students are Deaf and I have to interpret using Auslan all of your videos, or even better43 votes
Just another update to this – we now have subtitles on some individual stories as well as the episodes. We still have to do subtitles by hand and we don’t have the resources to do this to all stories every week but just look for the CC icon in the player and it’ll have closed captions. Also, because of the time it takes to do them, captions may not appear on stories until the Wednesday. If you have any questions please email me.
Just to let you know that we have had sooo many problems with BTN this term with the Adobe Flash. What happened is that when the ABC upgraded to Adobe Flash 11.2 Holmesglen didn't have this on our system. So, no picture, no class, until the Adobe Flash 11.2 upgrade was individually installed.1 vote
Having transcripts in Word enables me to make cloze exercises, which is great for ESL. copying and pasting from the pdf works but takes a lot of re-formatting24 votes
You will now find teacher activities in both PDF and Word on the new teacher page. Sorry they were left off and thanks for your patience.
